The Topeka Center for Peace and Justice seeks to provide a means to increase the number of minority Kansas Court approved mediators in the Topeka area. We see a need for more minority representation in the field of parent/adolescent mediators. Mediation is a proven intervention for families in conflict and for teens who break the law. Studies show that African American and other underrepresented teens are more likely to face law enforcement and become entangled in the legal system than any other group. It will benefit them and our community in general to have mediators who share the same ethnicity as the juvenile who is referred to mediation.
The Center for Peace and Justice is providing Core and Parent/Adolescent Mediation training and practicum opportunities for 12 individuals who identify as minority. The training is being provided by Roxanne Emmert Davis.
