Peace Camp
A popular annual program is PEACE CAMP, a week long, full-day program held in late summer for children from across the community. Its purpose is to model values of cooperation and friendship, to promote appreciation for cultural diversity and to teach concrete skills for resolving conflict that are constructive and nonviolent.

The unique curriculum developed by CENTER volunteers is available for use by other interested organizations.
Volunteers are needed to help with teaching, recreation, music, and meal preparation. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Bill Beachy at 785-232-4388 or fill out our volunteer form.
Sorry, but Peace Camp will not be held during summer 2010. Watch for details for Peace Camp 2011.
International Peace
The CENTER works to advance the cause of international peace by holding forums that will look for remedies to lessen tension and conflict. In partnership with Washburn University faculty, this program publicizes the Washburn Peace Studies minor that it helped create. In addition, it supports the Topeka sister city project in El Salvador.
Topeka Alliance on Central America
The Topeka Alliance on Central America is the Topeka sister city project in El Salvador.
The Alliance works to:
- increase public awareness of the current situation in Central America
- strengthen public demand for a change in current policy and advocate more just and humane policies
- raise funds in support of Central American people as they struggle to achieve justice and a better life
The Alliance’s Philosophy
A variety of convictions motivates our participation in the Alliance: religious or ethical belief in nonviolent change, support for progressive movements in Central America, or simple determination to prevent our fellow citizens from dying in a questionable foreign adventure. We see that the present upheaval in Central America is caused by intolerable living conditions and by U.S. support for powerful elites. Our national interest does not conflict with the human needs of Central American people.
By actively supporting political and economic democracy, we affirm our nation’s professed belief in the values of peace, human rights, and national self-determination.
The Alliance’s Activities
We have simple Rice and Beans Dinners to remind us of the diet of many Central American people and as an occasion to hear speakers, view films to inform the community and ourselves on U.S. policies and the current situation in Central America.
